| Poll: What kind of PotC fan are you? |
[17 Jul 2009|02:35pm] |
|
Hello, fandom newbie, sticking her head in.
If anybody is interested in my jagged thoughts about getting into PotC, you can read all about that here.
This is zeromabi, I'm just posting with my unused plus account right now, so I can do a little poll.
Poll #1431017
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All What kind of PotC fan are you?
This is of course not comprehensive (and a little hyperbolic), but when it comes to the reception of the three movies, there seen to be a few 'taste-camps' in (and out of) fandom and these seem to be the most prominent. I'm curious how the members/watchers of this community will split up.

Watching : The Ramen Girl |

I may not to get to post one of these again for longer than usual. I'm heading to Vegas for the remainder of the summer and between visiting a friend for a few days and then the flight, I'm not sure of my internet situation for a lot of the summer (I should have it but I don't know the details)
So anyway, we start off this section of Partners in Crime with the wonderful and infamous window scene. I have nothing of Donna by herself, which takes away from it in some ways, but I have a theme and I'm sticking to it! That being said, I feel like there are some fun pictures in this section and I hope other people agree.
( The Doctor and Donna both at once leads to sheer awesomeness! )

| rec: Seven Words and a Metaphor |
[17 Jul 2009|10:23am] |
|
Story: Seven Words and a Metaphor Author: LizBee Rating: All ages Word Count: 1613 Author's Summary: "You know," said the Doctor, "I could bring your government down with a single word." Characters/Pairings: Eight/Romana Warnings: none
Recced because: I’ve always liked Romana very much when she travelled with the Fourth Doctor. So when she met the Eighth Doctor in the audio play “Shada”, I was surprised how well they worked together. I would so much like to see them travelling the universe again, Romana all feisty and superior, the Eighth Doctor so pretty and capricious. What a couple!
If you like skirmishes like this:
"‘You've hijacked me into a metaphor!’ ‘No,’ said Romana patiently, ‘you're just not a very good dancer.’ ‘And it's pretty average, you know, for a metaphor.’"
Then this is just the story for you! The Doctor is so Doctorish and Romana is all presidential. And it’s got dancing! Need I say more?

| rec: Pandora’s Box |
[17 Jul 2009|10:17am] |
|
Story: Pandora’s Box Author: Cathica Rating: all ages Word Count: 100 Author's Summary: He leaves Donna one memory. Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, The Doctor (10th) Warnings: none
Recced because: We all remember the horrible last part of Journey’s End. The Doctor deleting Donna’s memory – abandoning the best time of her life and at the same time taking its souvenir also. It’s impossible for me to describe what happened in MY head when the Doctor said Goodbye to the Donna he knows. This drabble I rec today manages (for me) to say in 100 words that what I couldn’t in 1000. And there is so much hidden underneath … I really love it.

| Memoirs of a Good-For-Nothing |
[17 Jul 2009|02:56pm] |
Joseph von Eichendorff's Memoirs of a Good-For-Nothing is a 19th-century German Romantic novella. Possibly European Lit majors are the only people today who're forced to read this thing, in which case the rest of you might want to thank your lucky stars.
The story is supposed to epitomize a charmingly rose-tinted Romantic view or the world or some such thing. According to the translator's introduction, “Happy coincidence is a stage property which is so unobtrusively employed that only upon reflection do we discover all its workings.” This is utter tripe. "Unobtrusively"? "Happy coincidence" is the only thing that keeps the damn story going at all, and it's painfully obvious in every page.
The narrator is a Man of Very Little Brain, who sets out from home to make his fortune and wanders around Europe for a bit. He has no planning skills at all, by which I mean his adventures generally go like this:

Unspoiled version: as with the book, I thought this had some powerful scenes but also somewhat suffered from the fact JKR crammed all the teenage romance she wouldn't have time for in the last volume in this one. Jim Broadbent is great as Horace Slughorn, this is hands down Michael Gambon's best performance as Dumbledore so far, Tom Felton steps up to the plate (which is important as this is the first book where Draco Malfoy becomes a) important to the plot and b) a more dimensional character), and Alan Rickman is great as ever. THAT scene is just perfect. On the downside of things, for me the feeling of the film went back to the "Rushed Cliff Notes on Harry Potter" or "Illustrated Highlights of Harry Potter" sense I had from the first two movies and which I thought the later ones somewhat successfully avoided. I also have no idea whether the film will make any sense at all if you haven't read the novels.

Title: First Kiss: Take Two Rating: G Characters: Ten/Donna, someone else =P Summary: Their sorta-first kiss...maybe...minus the anchovies. Word Count: 140...GAH! better luck next time. Disclaimer: If I owned them, the first time would NOT have included stupid anchovies, walnuts, and ginger beer now would it? A/N: This bunny won’t leave me alone so I had to write it...of course it’s a pile of nonsense, its coming from me isn’t it? lol

OH MY GOD I ALMOST KILLED MY COMPUTER.
See, nobody but me and Unamaga can get on our network for some reason I can't figure out. Not even my iphone. I've tried restarting the modem and the router and no joy. So I wanted to check the software for the router to figure out what's going on, except there *is* no software on my computer for some very bizarre reason. And so I started playing with the disc.
AND THEN THE INTERNET STOPPED. AND DIDN'T COME BACK. AND I TRIED VERY VERY HARD NOT TO CRY BECAUSE INTERNETS.
Thank god for system restore.
Eta - also, I went to show chopchica (we has one! she's awesome!!) where the plates are and I completely and utterly forgot and probably looked immensely amusing, but the laughter that followed, because I didn't know where my own plates are.
Dear weekend: YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO SUCK.

Immediate reaction to The Used's Artwork (download) - I love "Blood on My Hands" and "Men Are All The Same". I love "Kissing You Goodbye" because I have a huge piano kink. I'm very impressed with the lyrics overall. But I kind of wish it was screamier and dirtier.

idle_curiosity and myself would like to introduce a new POTC community, in appreciation of Elizabeth Swann. We might be small in number, but we're enthusiastic about the character. All are welcome to a site that keeps Elizabeth as the main focus, that accepts all ships and pairings, and takes a firm stand against bashing of any kind. loosened_stays will have fic, meta, art and discussion, and we'd love to have you give us a visit.

The Used - Artwork. Zipped file that should start downloading automatically and shouldn't expire.
It's on my personal webspace, with my full name in the URL, in case Bert McCracken would like to sue me. He can get in line behind this lady whose car I hit last February. (Totally not my fault; it was snowing.)
There was a brief but civil disagreement in a Used community about whether or not sharing a leaked album is morally wrong, and I'd rather not get involved in it, unless someone would like to yell at me, in which case, feel free.
I don't want to officially have an opinion on the album until I listen to it a few times, but I love love love pianos, and already there was "Kissing You Goodbye", a piano song, and now I have to change my pants.
